I had an opportunity to assign myself my own project, with a general interest in the area I chose Volkswagen. It was a 50/50 assignment, 50% research and 50% development & resolution. The research was about the Volkswagen Golf Mk1 to Mk7 and the VW advertisements, looking into Doyle Dane Bernbach and how they took the German VW Beetle, embraced their subject being a Jewish advertisement firm and displayed the Beetle with all its weaknesses and treated the reader like a friend that was in on the joke. I also looked into the way they used simple uncomplicated art and copy. I also looked into the VW Beetle and why it was replaced by the MK1 Golf in 1970, the popularity from the 1970s to now, the evolution of the VW Golf and finding out why the VW Golf was so popular Mk after Mk. I constructed a series of posters showing what made the Golf so popular, from the Mk1 to the Mk7, the text was from the internet, books, drivers comments and enthusiasts, showing the positives/strengths of the brand, the modern font was downloaded into Illustrator and is close to the same font used in Volkswagen adverts, looks similar to Comic Sans MS but whilst researching I realised Volkswagen use a number of fonts, I went for red sapphire as red was and is a popular colour for golf GTI's. Along with the strap line 'The Golf GTI: Seven Generations of Fun'.
